Northern Liberties - Loft district
The neighborhood that connects Old City to Fishtown
Northern Liberties is a former manufacturing district which first started turning heads in the early ’90s. This was a time when progressive, artists migrated north from Old City, lured by the neighborhood’s inherent charm and affordable rents.
Like-minded residents and entrepreneurs led to a quirky network of bars, restaurants and boutiques. All of this within neighborhood limits — Girard Avenue and Callowhill Street north and south, the Delaware River and 6th Street east and west. NoLibs’ value further increased with creation of ambitious mixed-use complexes such as The Schmidt’s Commons. Long established as a force, NoLibs exerts an economic and cultural influence on surrounding neighborhoods as well.
Founded in 1978, the NLNA has been in operation for more than 30 years. Our mission is to provide services and programs beneficial to all residents and businesses. The neighborhood has encouraged and promoted the preservation and beautification of our public spaces and has a plan to monitor the growth and development of the neighborhood to the benefit of the community.
The Schmidt’s Commons — affectionately designed and named after Rome’s famous piazzas. This gives Philadelphians and visitors a new place to hang out outside. Schmidt’s Commons is a beautifully landscaped, 80,000 square-foot, open-air plaza with free events year round. This area is surrounded by three buildings including 35 artists’ studios, boutiques and restaurants.
An annual August event, the Northern Liberties 2nd Street Festival draws thousands of people in a six-block stretch of North 2nd Street between Germantown Avenue and Spring Garden Street. Live bands play across three stages. In the middle of the festival, a dedicated space for street performers will bring additional entertainment. Plenty of food and drink vendors providing an array of eats and drinks and merchandise vendors selling crafts, clothes and more.
Yards Brewing Company opened in 1994, it resuscitated the city’s brewing legacy by ending a decades-long period without any operational breweries. Now located in a 70,000 square foot facility at 5th and Spring Garden Streets Yards’ 100% wind-powered brewery churns out eight signature beers, a number of seasonals and the Ales of the Revolution line, based on recipes conceived by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.
By Illuminating a stretch of Spring Garden Street with the neon lighting, Silk City has quickly become one of Philadelphia’s most popular destinations since reopening in 2007. It’s even gotten the attention of the New York Times, which called the place “the hottest party in town.” Silk City can be described as a diner/restaurant/bar/beer garden/nightclub hybrid. This is the kind of place where you can get beer (or mojitos) and a burger, then spend the rest of the night dancing to your favorite guilty pleasure tracks from the ’90s.
